Vasilis Argyriou is a PhD researcher for Technology and Governance (TaG) at the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences, ETH Zürich.
His ongoing dissertation project investigates data practices, knowledge production, truth claims and decision-making in large-scale IT infrastructures of eu-LISA for digital border control and migration management in the Schengen Area and explores the epistemological, organizational and political implications of data practices and quality in socio-technical digital systems of risk assessment and governance. This research is part of the CURATE project, funded by ERC/SERI Starting Grant, supervised by Matthias Leese and investigates data quality in European Law Enforcement and border control cooperation.
Vasilis holds a MSc degree in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (HPST), Joint interdepartmental program offered by History and Philosophy of Science department, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens & Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, majoring in Science and Technology Studies (STS) with the thesis on “The technopolitics of Smart Borders in EU: From biometrics to biomarkers (2020)” ; a specialisation in Science and Public Policy offered by the European Inter-University Association of Society, Science and Technology (ESST) and the University of Maastricht, and a BSc in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology from the NKUA. Before joining the TaG group at ETH, he worked as a research fellow for the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) and the Institute for Mediterranean Studies.
His research interests lie at the intersecting fields of knowledge production and governance, with emphasis given on the role of Science, Technology and Innovation on security, migration/mobility management, critical Data Studies, AI and Ethics, Technology assessment and Public Policy and digitisation of critical infrastructures.
