Sophie Bettex

Sophie Bettex is a PhD researcher for Technology and Governance (TaG) at the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences, ETH Zürich.

She is an investigator for the CURATE project (ERC/SERI Starting Grant) focused on data quality within European law enforcement and border control agencies. Her doctorate research investigates data practices related to the quality of data-driven systems in law enforcement agencies through multi-sited ethnographic methods. She is interested in the interactions between practitioners and their data by employing insights and concepts from different fields, such as psychology, criminology, critical data studies, political sciences, as well as Science and Technology Studies (STS).

Sophie holds a BSc in Psychology from Leiden University and a dual MSc in Advanced Research in Criminology from Ghent University (cum laude) and Erasmus University Rotterdam. As part of her master’s thesis, she completed an ethnographic research titled “Hidden realities on the ‘one happy island’: Perspectives on human trafficking, human smuggling, and irregular migration in Aruba” (2023).
