Research

The research activities of the Technology and Governance group revolve around the transformative effects of digital technologies on governance. A particular focus is given to security organizations (law enforcement, border control, intelligence, etc.) and the ways in which they implement and use data-driven and algorithmically mediated tools.

In the tradition of Science and Technology Studies, technology is conceptualized as a mediator for knowledge and action. In this capacity, it plays a key role in how social order is imagined, produced, and maintained.

We primarily use qualitative methods (interviews, focus groups, participant observation) to explore how security organizations perceive of the world and act within it in ways that are mediated through digital technologies.
